An operating system is a crucial piece of software responsible for managing memory usage, controlling running processes, and handling hardware and software within a computer. The use of an operating system enables user-computer interaction without requiring the user to understand complex machine language. In this study, we analyze user experiences with Elementary OS, a Linux-based operating system, using the heuristic evaluation method to assess user interface (UI) and user experience (UX). This research was conducted with 35 students from the Politeknik Negeri Bali using ten heuristic evaluation parameters: Visibility of system status, Flexibility and efficiency of use, Match between system and the real world, Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors, User control and freedom, Aesthetic and minimalist design, Help and documentation, Consistency and standards, Recognition rather than recall, and Error prevention. Respondents, consisting of 26 males and 9 females, were asked to use Elementary OS for one week and provide feedback based on their experience. The results indicate that the most appreciated aspect was the aesthetic and minimalist design, with the highest satisfaction rate of 76.6%, whereas help and documentation had the lowest satisfaction rate at 64.7%. Overall, other aspects like system visibility, flexibility, real-world match, and error prevention received positive responses with satisfaction percentages above 67%. The average user satisfaction level for Elementary OS is 69.8%, indicating that the majority of users are satisfied with this operating system, although there is room for improvement, particularly in help and documentation. These results provide a foundation for recommendations to improve Elementary OS to enhance the user experience.
